PEARLS & PLEATS

Emily of lifestyle blog Epicurean Emily shares her favorite affordable Autumn/Winter 2017 Trends, wearing a Zara black lace blouse, a J.Crew faux-leather black pleated skirt, Topshop Gold Glitter Mary-Janes, BaubleBar Pearl Hoop Earrings, and a Target Black Quilted Cross-body Bag.

Summer came and went (faster than ever, I might add) and it seems that September creeped up on us once again. While I love Summer for its warm temps and mood-boosting sunshine, I do have a soft spot for Autumn- especially when the September issues start hitting the shelves, revealing all the best trends of the season. Fall is when I have the most fun with dressing, as once winter hits, I’m just grabbing whatever pieces are warmest and in summer, I’m ditching all unnecessary layers. There is something indescribably wonderful about that crisp Autumn air and for me, it opens up a world of outfit possibilities. The AW17 runways exuded luxury, thanks to fabrics such as velvet and fur, pearlized finishes and embellishments, and dramatic pleats. Pearls have always been my accessory of choice (given the innate Francophile in me), so this is definitely the “trend” I’m most excited about this season! These BaubleBar earrings were the perfect statement jewelry piece to begin building my collection since I can wear them with many different outfits. Shop my look and all of my favorite affordable Autumn/Winter 2017 trends below!

P.S. Super simple up-do how-to here

HOW TO DRESS UP FOR SCHOOL

Emily Davis of life-style blog Epicurean Emily wears a red striped dress with a navy sailor cardigan on campus at Duke University's Gothic Reading Room, as she shares how to dress up for school.

With classes now in session for so many of you, I thought it would be helpful to share my tips for how to dress up for school. I wasn’t above wearing leggings when I was a student, but on the days when I did take the time to get ready and dress up, I noticed that I was actually more confident and as a result, performed better academically and was more socially adventurous and prepared for classroom interaction. I’m not necessarily saying that you have to dress up to have confidence- some people feel extremely uncomfortable in dressier clothes! I know plenty of girls who would only ever wear a dress on their wedding day! But as a socially awkward introvert, the boost of confidence I get from wearing a great outfit is basically a super-power. Keep reading to learn how to dress up for school without looking “too extra”!

  1. Seems obvious, but I’ll say it anyway- campus is not the place for stilettos. Unless you’re dressing up for a professional event or an interview, leave your heels at home. I (halfway) believe you when you say that you can walk in them all day with no problem, but the quickest way to make your look inappropriate for school is to throw on a pair of sky-high stilettos. When you’re trekking between classes all day, you need to be able to walk (quickly and painlessly!). If you can’t commit to flats, block heels are a great trendy option these days that will still give you some height. Also, as we head into the Autumn season, boots with low heels will be a go-to for me.
  2. Keep accessories minimal. You all know this is just how I live my life, but when wanting to look put together for school, I feel it should be all about the clothes. A beautiful casual dress, a necessary cardigan or jacket, and a sensible yet stylish shoe, and a few “accents”. For me, jewelry is a real distraction and I find myself irritated by a wrist full of bracelets or a pair of statement earrings while I’m taking notes and trying to focus on a lecture. If you’re craving some sparkle, daily jewelry is the way to go, like a classic studded earring or a delicate necklace. And sunglasses are always a necessity for the walk to your next class!
  3. Always bring a cozy sweater or jacket. Is it just me or is it always SO cold in the classroom?! As a cold-natured person, I’ve learned over the years to never be without a warm garment. We’re entering sweater weather now and cardigans can so easily be thrown into a backpack or tote when not in use.
  4. Find your “go-to” outfit. Whether you love wearing dresses, skirts, or dark wash jeans and a blouse, wear whatever it is that you feel amazing in and that you can throw on easily when you’re in a rush to get to class on time. Personally I love printed dresses and I usually look for a mid to high neck-line and a moderate length when shopping for casual dresses. Anything too low-cut or short and I’m self conscious the entire day, which is the opposite of confident!

I hope these tips on how to dress up for school will help you feel more comfortable when wearing something a little different to class! Maybe you’re most comfortable in leggings, but don’t knock dressing up for school until you try it!

BUSINESS IN BLUSH

Emily Davis of lifestyle blog Epicurean Emily styles blush workwear with ASOS blush trousers, a black and white blouse, a 3/4 sleeved black blazer, Aldo cap-toe block heels, a DKNY nude bag, and a Chloé Carlena Sunglasses dupe from Aldo.

Ahh summer… Vacations, barbecues, pool parties… and work??? While I don’t work in an office environment, my FOMO (fear of missing out) seems to multiply as the temperatures rise. Being in New York City over the summer hasn’t helped my productivity at all, either, as I long to be in the sunshine every day, exploring every corner of a city that I love dearly. I’ve always had a soft spot for summer since I enjoy being outdoors, so it’s been a real struggle for me to be motivated to get anything done online (i.e. inside) lately. One of my goals for this season was to practice intentionality, especially being more intentional with my time. I started introducing habits to manage my time more efficiently and while I don’t put them to use every day, I can say I’ve noticed such an increase in my productivity and energy to complete the tasks at hand when I do implement them. The biggest game-changer for me has been writing out “to-do” lists. But here’s the catch- I write manageable tasks down for the day ahead. For example, I don’t set myself up for failure by including things like “write new blog post” since I know that from start to finish, it takes me about 3 days to prepare a post. I’ve recently found a few creative entrepreneurial podcasts that I love (like The Laptop Lifestyle and Don’t Keep Your Dayjob), and I’ve realized that lots of successful people have a deep understanding of who they are and have discovered how they work best. If they’re an author who is easily overwhelmed, they don’t put “write book” on their to-do list. Instead, they break it down into bite-sized, manageable pieces, such as “brainstorm topic/story ideas”, “create outline”, “write chapter one”. Building blocks are everything. Another thing to think about when making a “to-do” list, is the importance and urgency of each task. Even if they’re harder to complete or more daunting, dealing with the highest priority tasks first takes such a huge weight off your shoulders and helps you check the rest of the list off more quickly. “To-Do” lists aren’t just for entrepreneurs. Everyone who feels a sense of anxiety from an overwhelming schedule can benefit from taking time each evening to evaluate their intentions and set their priorities for the day ahead. The biggest impact I’ve noticed from utilizing “to-do” lists is that even if I don’t check every single thing off my list, it feels pretty good to be able to cross tasks off and I’m able to move onto the next one with a renewed focus. Do you have any tips that have helped you enhance productivity at work? Share them below in the comment section, if so!

TOP TIPS FOR SHOPPING AMAZON FASHION

Top Tips For Shopping Amazon Fashion 1

So apparently I missed the Amazon Prime Day train yesterday… (#BloggerFail), but I still wanted to share some tips for shopping fashion on Amazon. Like everyone else, I’ve become accustomed to the Prime 2-Day shipping on everyday items, but it was never my clothing or accessory destination until recently. Navigating an online retailer whose claim to fame is having everything under the sun can be both frustrating and time-consuming, so to make it a little easier (and so you can start getting your new shoes delivered to your doorstep in a mere two days!), I’m sharing tips that have helped me find what I’m looking for on the jungle that is Amazon.com.

  • Target Your Search

Unless you enjoy spending hours browsing, take advantage of the customization of Amazon‘s search tools, which can narrow down results by Prime 2-Day shipping eligible, color, brand, reviews, and category. You can get really specific, but in my experience, it’s better to type in a keyword that’s more generic and then check the required boxes to fine-tune the results.

  • Shop Specific Brands

I really love buying fashion and accessories on Amazon from brands that I already know and love for two reasons. One, if the brand is well-established and consistent, I’m more familiar with their sizing and am more likely to order the correct size. Two, as long as the product is distributed by the original designer/manufacturer, I know that the quality will be up to par. You can find out who the seller is at the top of an item’s description- it should be the store’s name in blue text with a click-able link to their shop’s page. I’ve been loving searching for Sam Edelman shoes on Amazon

  • Shop Amazon’s Fashion Brands

Because there are so many options, one keyword search can translate to thousands of pages of results, ranging in price and quality. You can find super cheap (and usually cheaply made) pieces from thousands of sellers. On the opposite end, there are several well-known brands who sell items with some pretty steep prices. I find that Amazon‘s own fashion brands are a great middle-of-the-road option between quality and price. One of my favorites is Paris Sunday because they are reasonably-priced, trendy yet classic, and well-constructed.

  • Give Back with AmazonSmile

If you purchase your items through Amazon Smile, Amazon donates 0.5% of every eligible purchase directly to your charity of choice. This is SUCH an easy way to support your local chapters of national organizations you’re passionate about and you can change charities at any time. Be sure to make your purchases through smile.amazon.com in order for them to be eligible for your charity to receive their percentage.

Find outfit links below, as well as some Paris Sunday and Sam Edelman favorites, all of which can be found on Amazon.

MOD MINI

Mod Mini 1

Now that summer is here, dress season is in full swing! I really love the shift dress style (a less tailored option with a short hemline) for warmer weather and windy days because the looser fit makes them less clingy and they’re not billowy enough to have to wrestle with against the wind. Since I’m on the shorter end of the spectrum, I love to wear shift dresses with heels to give me some extra height, as sometimes the straight and narrow fit of the dress can shorten my already petite torso. Not going to lie, I’m jealous of you taller ladies because I think shift dresses look amazing when dressed down with a pair of sneakers! See my summer shift dress picks below and tell me which one will you be rocking all season long! P.S. All the dresses are under $100!

ROOFTOP ROMPER

Rooftop Romper 1

Hello from New York City! My summer in the city is officially underway and I couldn’t be happier about it! Luke and I headed to the Whitney Museum last week to enjoy the warmth and sunshine on their amazing patio space and peeked at a few of their new exhibits. Read about my first visit to the Whitney and the MoMA here.

I love wearing rompers on these hot days we’ve been having lately and they’re especially nice for times when you’ll be doing quite a lot of walking. Whether you’re exploring your vacation town or visiting a theme-park, they’re such a great cool & comfortable summer wardrobe staple, so I linked several of my favorite options that can take you from day to night all summer long.

BELL SLEEVE BLOUSE TWO WAYS + MY FIRST CHICWISH EXPERIENCE

Bell Sleeve Blouse Two Ways + My First Chicwish Experience 1

As soon as I booked tickets for the Create & Cultivate conference, I began putting together my outfits for the event. It was love at first sight when I scrolled upon this gorgeous lace blouse from Chicwish, a popular clothing company among the blogging community and a retailer I had been wanting to try out for quite some time. I placed my order on April 12th and felt a sense of relief as my outfit began to come to life. Even though the blouse was the first piece I ordered, around the middle of the month I began to wonder if it would arrive in time for the conference. Chicwish had emailed me an order confirmation, but I didn’t realize that there was no shipment confirmation until I received one on April 27th, over two weeks after I placed my order. I emailed customer service and after some back and forth, I was able to get a really sketchy tracking number that didn’t tell me much other than when my order had shipped out of China.

I arrived back home on Sunday after the conference to find my Chicwish order in the mailbox (just my luck!). 🙄  The top was well-constructed and arrived in tact (no loose stitches or holes), but I have a hard time saying that I was “impressed” by the quality- it retails for $60 and I’ve never paid more than $30 for a blouse of similar quality at Forever 21. I’m really lucky that it fit so well, because according to other reviews online, their return policy is an absolute nightmare and you have to pay to have the items returned to China before you’re eligible for a refund. I won’t lie and say I’m not in love with this top- it may be my favorite in my closet right now, but I really have mixed feelings about Chicwish after my first purchase with them.

I really wish my experience had been a better one, because I think they have so many cute and unique styles that are hard to find and/or are more expensive elsewhere, but I have a hard time supporting dishonest companies. Not telling me that something is out of stock and won’t ship out until two weeks after my order is placed (even though the funds were deducted from my account immediately after I ordered) is very dishonest. I also really don’t appreciate companies that treat bloggers differently than they would treat paying customers. When one of your favorite influencers recommends a new product or retailer, there is a level of trust that you’ve developed in them as a reader that makes it easier to branch out and try new things and products. Based on the numerous blogger raves, I expected much more from Chicwish. I’m not pinning this on bloggers because I’m sure many of them have never been on the consumer end in their exchanges with Chicwish and probably don’t know that this is happening, but it is unfortunate that their sponsored posts don’t depict the truth about their company’s sketchy practices.

It’s pretty frustrating when you find a company whose products you love, but their values just don’t align with yours. I won’t be ordering from Chicwish again after this experience and I wanted to warn all of you about their unprofessional business practices, hopefully before you find yourself in a similar situation.  I always want to be completely transparent and having worked in retail in the past, I place a high value on customer service and am not afraid in the least bit to call out a company in need of improvement. To end on a positive note, these trousers were my first ASOS purchase and I was really impressed with both the quality of the product (very accurately depicted on the website and nicely constructed), and how quickly the order arrived. There’s always a silver lining, ehh?

What’s the best (or worst!) online shopping experience you’ve ever had?! And yes, Amazon Prime orders count, too! 😂

STROLLING IN SOHO

Strolling in Soho 1

For those of you who don’t know me personally, you should know that I rank a solid 10 on the introvert scale. Impending social events will have me in anxious knots for days, even weeks, sometimes. I do enjoy making new friends, but the repetitive process of rounds of introductions coupled with shallow small talk stresses me out to the max. I even read this book in preparation for the Create & Cultivate conference (and would definitely recommend- even for extroverts!). Blogging can be pretty solitary, but when it comes to networking events, making connections & contacts face to face is vital. I made a point to reach out to meet some other attendees, so I’d at least see some familiar faces at the conference and would be more at ease. Taking that initial leap of faith to reach out to a handful of total strangers online is how I was able to meet Alexis, a fellow creative based in Nashville who has her own blog and podcast, “The Laptop Lifestyle”. We ended up really hitting it off- heading to dinner after our Happy Hour event on Friday evening, accompanying each other at all of our panels on Saturday, and before saying our goodbyes on Sunday, deciding to make the most of our time in the city and wake up early to stroll the empty city streets and take some photos. Surrounding yourself with others who understand you, whether on a personal or emotional level, or just in shared similar interests & aspirations is so empowering and I headed back home with a renewed sense of all of the possibilities that can appear and amazing people you can connect with when you get out of your own head and begin to test your comfort zone.

Here are a few simple tips to help YOU start stepping outside of your comfort zone;

  • INITIATE A COFFEE DATE Maybe it’s with an old friend who you’d like to reconnect with, someone who you admire and look up to, or just someone who you feel needs a friend.
  • ATTEND A CLASS I’ve taken three classes this year at various venues (an essential oils class sponsored by my local Parks & Recreation Department, a class about how to grow sprouts and micro-greens at my local Co-Op, and a talk on the benefits of the herb Turmeric at my local library) and they are a great way to meet new people who share similar interests in a learning and self-improving environment. Having a task at hand is a great tactic for introverts to feel more comfortable in social situations (I’m telling you, read the book!)
  • WEIGH GOALS AGAINST ACTIONS Maybe you’re looking for a career change to a completely new industry that you know NO ONE in, so you need to network to get your name out there and meet potential employers and/or clients. Is landing your dream job worth a little time spent networking? The actions needed to achieve our goals often look much more accomplishable and less intimidating when we look at the bigger picture of what we’re working towards and writing them out (yes on pen & paper!) helps, too!

FLAMENCO FUN

Flamenco Fun 1

Ok, I know I’ve said before that off-the-shoulder isn’t really my thing, so I want to firstly apologize for having two outfits featuring OTS styles back to back… A girl can change her mind, right?! What I really love about this dress is that while it’s still fitted, the voluminous ruffled neck-line detail adds such interest to something as simple as a white dress. It may just be one of my favorite Forever 21 purchases ever! I fell in love with these earrings from BaubleBar and even though they’re quite vibrant, I think they’ll go with so many things- like a simple white tee or my favorite black & white striped tee with boyfriend jeans. I was super excited to try out BaubleBar for the first time, as it’s a pretty popular online jewelry destination for bloggers and I love their unique and fun pieces. Most of you know that I’m not really into jewelry all that much, but I do love a great pair of statement earrings, and good quality ones are getting harder and harder to find at Forever 21. Even though they are made in China, I was pleased with the quality of this pair and they were packaged well for the shipping process. Since they offer free shipping with every purchase, I’m considering buying one new piece from them every month to begin to build a real accessory collection- because the one I have now is basically non-existent! 🙈    What’s one thing that you wish you had more of in your closet?

GINGHAM IN THE GARDENS

Gingham In The Gardens 1

Any time someone pays us a visit here in Durham, one of my favorite spots to go when showing them around is Sarah P. Duke Gardens. This lush on-campus oasis is such a gorgeous retreat, with 55 acres of four separate garden areas, featuring a wide variety of regional and seasonal plants. I’d been a few times before, but it truly felt like a new, magical wonderland during my visit of the Spring season. Everywhere you look, you’re surrounded by a rainbow of blooms! I loved this H&M gingham off-the-shoulder top on its own, but I just couldn’t help but throw my new Victoria Beckham for Target bee-print scarf around my neck to add a little playfulness to the look. I’ve noticed that many girls style OTS with very minimal accessories so that the neckline does all of the talking, but I think they’re the perfect tops to pair with statement-making neckwear, whether it’s a chunky necklace, a choker, or a bandana or light scarf. I’m wearing my white jeans once again (I can now assure you that you NEED some white denim for Spring & Summer!), and I kept the accessories dark to tie into the specks of black in the scarf. Now tell me- what’s your favorite Spring flower? I love daffodils! They had the cutest mini ones in the gardens hiding underneath the tulips! 🤗
