BUSINESS IN BLUSH

Emily Davis of lifestyle blog Epicurean Emily styles blush workwear with ASOS blush trousers, a black and white blouse, a 3/4 sleeved black blazer, Aldo cap-toe block heels, a DKNY nude bag, and a Chloé Carlena Sunglasses dupe from Aldo.

Ahh summer… Vacations, barbecues, pool parties… and work??? While I don’t work in an office environment, my FOMO (fear of missing out) seems to multiply as the temperatures rise. Being in New York City over the summer hasn’t helped my productivity at all, either, as I long to be in the sunshine every day, exploring every corner of a city that I love dearly. I’ve always had a soft spot for summer since I enjoy being outdoors, so it’s been a real struggle for me to be motivated to get anything done online (i.e. inside) lately. One of my goals for this season was to practice intentionality, especially being more intentional with my time. I started introducing habits to manage my time more efficiently and while I don’t put them to use every day, I can say I’ve noticed such an increase in my productivity and energy to complete the tasks at hand when I do implement them. The biggest game-changer for me has been writing out “to-do” lists. But here’s the catch- I write manageable tasks down for the day ahead. For example, I don’t set myself up for failure by including things like “write new blog post” since I know that from start to finish, it takes me about 3 days to prepare a post. I’ve recently found a few creative entrepreneurial podcasts that I love (like The Laptop Lifestyle and Don’t Keep Your Dayjob), and I’ve realized that lots of successful people have a deep understanding of who they are and have discovered how they work best. If they’re an author who is easily overwhelmed, they don’t put “write book” on their to-do list. Instead, they break it down into bite-sized, manageable pieces, such as “brainstorm topic/story ideas”, “create outline”, “write chapter one”. Building blocks are everything. Another thing to think about when making a “to-do” list, is the importance and urgency of each task. Even if they’re harder to complete or more daunting, dealing with the highest priority tasks first takes such a huge weight off your shoulders and helps you check the rest of the list off more quickly. “To-Do” lists aren’t just for entrepreneurs. Everyone who feels a sense of anxiety from an overwhelming schedule can benefit from taking time each evening to evaluate their intentions and set their priorities for the day ahead. The biggest impact I’ve noticed from utilizing “to-do” lists is that even if I don’t check every single thing off my list, it feels pretty good to be able to cross tasks off and I’m able to move onto the next one with a renewed focus. Do you have any tips that have helped you enhance productivity at work? Share them below in the comment section, if so!

MOD MINI

Mod Mini 1

Now that summer is here, dress season is in full swing! I really love the shift dress style (a less tailored option with a short hemline) for warmer weather and windy days because the looser fit makes them less clingy and they’re not billowy enough to have to wrestle with against the wind. Since I’m on the shorter end of the spectrum, I love to wear shift dresses with heels to give me some extra height, as sometimes the straight and narrow fit of the dress can shorten my already petite torso. Not going to lie, I’m jealous of you taller ladies because I think shift dresses look amazing when dressed down with a pair of sneakers! See my summer shift dress picks below and tell me which one will you be rocking all season long! P.S. All the dresses are under $100!

ROOFTOP ROMPER

Rooftop Romper 1

Hello from New York City! My summer in the city is officially underway and I couldn’t be happier about it! Luke and I headed to the Whitney Museum last week to enjoy the warmth and sunshine on their amazing patio space and peeked at a few of their new exhibits. Read about my first visit to the Whitney and the MoMA here.

I love wearing rompers on these hot days we’ve been having lately and they’re especially nice for times when you’ll be doing quite a lot of walking. Whether you’re exploring your vacation town or visiting a theme-park, they’re such a great cool & comfortable summer wardrobe staple, so I linked several of my favorite options that can take you from day to night all summer long.

BELL SLEEVE BLOUSE TWO WAYS + MY FIRST CHICWISH EXPERIENCE

Bell Sleeve Blouse Two Ways + My First Chicwish Experience 1

As soon as I booked tickets for the Create & Cultivate conference, I began putting together my outfits for the event. It was love at first sight when I scrolled upon this gorgeous lace blouse from Chicwish, a popular clothing company among the blogging community and a retailer I had been wanting to try out for quite some time. I placed my order on April 12th and felt a sense of relief as my outfit began to come to life. Even though the blouse was the first piece I ordered, around the middle of the month I began to wonder if it would arrive in time for the conference. Chicwish had emailed me an order confirmation, but I didn’t realize that there was no shipment confirmation until I received one on April 27th, over two weeks after I placed my order. I emailed customer service and after some back and forth, I was able to get a really sketchy tracking number that didn’t tell me much other than when my order had shipped out of China.

I arrived back home on Sunday after the conference to find my Chicwish order in the mailbox (just my luck!). 🙄  The top was well-constructed and arrived in tact (no loose stitches or holes), but I have a hard time saying that I was “impressed” by the quality- it retails for $60 and I’ve never paid more than $30 for a blouse of similar quality at Forever 21. I’m really lucky that it fit so well, because according to other reviews online, their return policy is an absolute nightmare and you have to pay to have the items returned to China before you’re eligible for a refund. I won’t lie and say I’m not in love with this top- it may be my favorite in my closet right now, but I really have mixed feelings about Chicwish after my first purchase with them.

I really wish my experience had been a better one, because I think they have so many cute and unique styles that are hard to find and/or are more expensive elsewhere, but I have a hard time supporting dishonest companies. Not telling me that something is out of stock and won’t ship out until two weeks after my order is placed (even though the funds were deducted from my account immediately after I ordered) is very dishonest. I also really don’t appreciate companies that treat bloggers differently than they would treat paying customers. When one of your favorite influencers recommends a new product or retailer, there is a level of trust that you’ve developed in them as a reader that makes it easier to branch out and try new things and products. Based on the numerous blogger raves, I expected much more from Chicwish. I’m not pinning this on bloggers because I’m sure many of them have never been on the consumer end in their exchanges with Chicwish and probably don’t know that this is happening, but it is unfortunate that their sponsored posts don’t depict the truth about their company’s sketchy practices.

It’s pretty frustrating when you find a company whose products you love, but their values just don’t align with yours. I won’t be ordering from Chicwish again after this experience and I wanted to warn all of you about their unprofessional business practices, hopefully before you find yourself in a similar situation.  I always want to be completely transparent and having worked in retail in the past, I place a high value on customer service and am not afraid in the least bit to call out a company in need of improvement. To end on a positive note, these trousers were my first ASOS purchase and I was really impressed with both the quality of the product (very accurately depicted on the website and nicely constructed), and how quickly the order arrived. There’s always a silver lining, ehh?

What’s the best (or worst!) online shopping experience you’ve ever had?! And yes, Amazon Prime orders count, too! 😂

FLAMENCO FUN

Flamenco Fun 1

Ok, I know I’ve said before that off-the-shoulder isn’t really my thing, so I want to firstly apologize for having two outfits featuring OTS styles back to back… A girl can change her mind, right?! What I really love about this dress is that while it’s still fitted, the voluminous ruffled neck-line detail adds such interest to something as simple as a white dress. It may just be one of my favorite Forever 21 purchases ever! I fell in love with these earrings from BaubleBar and even though they’re quite vibrant, I think they’ll go with so many things- like a simple white tee or my favorite black & white striped tee with boyfriend jeans. I was super excited to try out BaubleBar for the first time, as it’s a pretty popular online jewelry destination for bloggers and I love their unique and fun pieces. Most of you know that I’m not really into jewelry all that much, but I do love a great pair of statement earrings, and good quality ones are getting harder and harder to find at Forever 21. Even though they are made in China, I was pleased with the quality of this pair and they were packaged well for the shipping process. Since they offer free shipping with every purchase, I’m considering buying one new piece from them every month to begin to build a real accessory collection- because the one I have now is basically non-existent! 🙈    What’s one thing that you wish you had more of in your closet?

GINGHAM IN THE GARDENS

Gingham In The Gardens 1

Any time someone pays us a visit here in Durham, one of my favorite spots to go when showing them around is Sarah P. Duke Gardens. This lush on-campus oasis is such a gorgeous retreat, with 55 acres of four separate garden areas, featuring a wide variety of regional and seasonal plants. I’d been a few times before, but it truly felt like a new, magical wonderland during my visit of the Spring season. Everywhere you look, you’re surrounded by a rainbow of blooms! I loved this H&M gingham off-the-shoulder top on its own, but I just couldn’t help but throw my new Victoria Beckham for Target bee-print scarf around my neck to add a little playfulness to the look. I’ve noticed that many girls style OTS with very minimal accessories so that the neckline does all of the talking, but I think they’re the perfect tops to pair with statement-making neckwear, whether it’s a chunky necklace, a choker, or a bandana or light scarf. I’m wearing my white jeans once again (I can now assure you that you NEED some white denim for Spring & Summer!), and I kept the accessories dark to tie into the specks of black in the scarf. Now tell me- what’s your favorite Spring flower? I love daffodils! They had the cutest mini ones in the gardens hiding underneath the tulips! 🤗

FAVORITE SPRING/SUMMER TRENDS

Spring/Summer Color Palette; Yellow and Pink

Shocking pink and lively yellow made a vibrant statement from the runways of several major design houses this season (Céline, Chloé, Valentino, and Gucci, to name a few). I couldn’t be happier about this non-traditional bright color palette for spring, which is so much more saturated than the pastels and dainty florals that we’ve become so used to seeing season after season. If you’re a bit hesitant to flaunt these statement-making hues, test the waters with a poppy accessory first. Many people are often afraid of wearing uber-pigmented shades for fear that they clash with their skin-tones. But with the array of blush, daffodil, bubblegum, canary, magenta, and mustard options available, I am a firm believer that anyone and everyone can embrace and rock this trend! Just experiment and find the shade that best suits you, and remember, the key to nailing any look (trendy or otherwise) is ALWAYS confidence!

Spring/Summer Prints; Gingham & Bold Stripes

I am a self-professed stripe addict and to me, stripes are a constant closest staple (which is why my closet resembles a colorful zebra…). Nevertheless, I’ll take any excuse to wear them more often and bold, colorful stripes are one of the biggest SS17 pattern trends so I’ll be over here lookin’ like a happy rainbow all season long. 😂   Another playful print I can get on board with is the classically cute gingham, perfect for a polished picnic-ready spring look.

Spring/Summer Silhouettes; Asymmetrical Hems, Off-The-Shoulder Styles, Ruffles

Off-the-Shoulder styles had a major moment last year and they haven’t lost any steam this season, although asymmetrical and deconstructed necklines are now invited to the party, too. And along with all these styles, comes ruffles. Loads and loads of voluminous frill. Just how I like my cupcakes. 😋  If you couldn’t get on board with the OTS trend last year (I’m still struggling with it despite my regular shoulder workouts…), then asymmetrical tops and dresses are your life-saver! They typically have more interest along the neckline and distract from a set of stocky shoulders that OTS tops tend to accentuate.

I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of mixing prints, but usually tend to shy away from pairing two patterns together for fear that it may be too obnoxious. But when I saw this gorgeous H&M floral blouse, I knew I had to style it for a fun workwear look and print mixing was the answer, since I don’t own any solid slacks… 😂  I really think the two patterns balance out nicely and here are a few reasons why;

  • The combination of an organic pattern (floral) and a geometric pattern (grid pattern), balance each other out because…
  • …the scale of the patterns is varied. Notice the floral pattern on the blouse is large and random. The small print on the ankle pants is repetitive and structured, which provides a much-needed stability to the look.
  • Both colors are neutral. By now, y’all know that I consider blush a neutral and it is a staple shade throughout my wardrobe, as it adds just a hint of color but can still look professional, feminine, or fun. I definitely don’t think neutral is the only option when it comes to mixing prints but it’s a great way to ease into the somewhat intimidating trend, especially when dressing for the office.
  • I added a belt and a vest to break up and create separation and space between the two patterns. It may seem like accessories would overwhelm an outfit with multiple prints but, when used thoughtfully, they really tie the look together.
  • Repetition exists not only in the patterns, but in other elements of the outfit. The strappy heels mimic the cinching created by the black strappy belt.

Have you ever played with print mixing? What are your fool-proof tips for nailing this trend?

P.S. This blouse was so nice, I just had to style it twice! 😂   So the outfit with the skirt is just a fun weekend look but I think it could be made into an office look, too, with the chiffon pleated skirts and block-heeled sandal I’ve linked below!

CASUAL IN TAN & ORANGE

Casual In Orange & Tan 1

Spring is in the air, and I’m finally wearing this Michael Kors Orange Anorak I scored at Nordstrom Rack last fall… 😳  😂   I love water resistant, lightweight jackets for all the impending “spring showers”, but they are also great to wear on the inevitable breezy & cool days. Since the “orange spice” color is not your typical Easter pastel, I paired it with white jeans to make it feel a little more appropriate for Spring. Lately, I can’t get enough of white denim. Although I have a closet full of jeans, I’ve never been the person to wear them every day and I’m really learning to love how a bright white pair can make an outfit feel more special and dressy. Finally, I topped the outfit off with a gold necklace to bring out the beautiful gold hardware in the jacket (I’m loving BaubleBar’s affordable collection for Target!) and of course, casual wear calls for my favorite sneakers, the Nike Air Max Thea Premium. The color I have was limited edition (and took me months to track down on a resale site!), but they now have a couple of very similar pairs that I’ve linked below! What’s your go-to casual outfit? Comment below and let me know!

SPRING BREAK PACKING GUIDE

Spring Break Packing Guide 1

Confession time… I’ve never been on a traditional “Spring Break” trip. Personally, beaches packed with a bunch of rowdy college kids funneling beer and throwing wet T-shirt contests never really appealed to me- I know, I’ll admit that I’m an old lady at heart. If I could re-visit my college days though, I would love to have saved up money for a girls getaway one year for Spring Break. Somewhere tropical, but not too far away, like the Bahamas would make for a relaxing and rejuvenating week off from classes and a memorable time with my closest friends. Although I don’t know when my next trip to the tropics will be, I’ve been dreaming of returning to the beach and basking in the sun’s warmth so I put together this little post including some of my favorite summer must-haves for your next getaway! Happy Shopping!

SWIMSUITS & COVER-UPS

I’ve been getting my swimsuits almost exclusively from Victoria’s Secret for so many years now, I almost didn’t know where to turn this year now that they’ve eliminated swimwear from their brand. I loved VS suits because I never had to worry about whether the bottoms had adequate lining or if the tops would be too sheer. I had certain styles that I knew were most flattering on me, so I would just stick with those and get a new color or pattern every now and then. VS PINK released new suits this season and, luckily, the ones I found are a little more refined than styles I’ve seen PINK release in the last few years! I know lots of people like Target’s swimwear, but I didn’t see anything that really caught my eye. I was really impressed with J. Crew’s selection, though it is a bit out of my price-range. They have several very classic swimsuits, with a few trendy ones for good measure. ASOS had some really cute & affordable options, but many of my favorites were already sold out like this one, and this one. I will have to test out some new swimwear brands this year and report back to you! I’d love to hear about your current go-to suits!

SUN PROTECTION

Please, please, please do not check your suitcase without packing it up with some mineral sunscreen! I swapped my traditional, chemical-laden sunscreen for a mineral one last summer and I’ve never looked back! Let’s just say it’s almost better to get burnt by the sun’s rays than it is to be slathering your body up with the toxic chemicals these products are comprised of. Learn more about these harmful ingredients and the benefit of mineral-based alternatives here. A little disclaimer; Zinc Oxide/Titanium Dioxide-based sunscreens are more “pigmented” than chemical sunscreens, so don’t expect the white “tint” to fade away completely- a small price to pay to avoid toxins if you ask me!  I have yet to try the COOLA option linked above, but it has rave reviews and it’s one of the only more natural sunscreens with a skin-tone evening feature so this would be a great product to use on your face! I’ve been loving Herbivore‘s products lately and use the Rose Mist before applying my facial moisturizer, so it would be a great product to utilize (in addition to your moisturizer) for restoring hydration to sun-exposed skin and also for freshening up during a day at the beach. Sun hats & sunnies aren’t just chic accessories- use them to protect your delicate eyes and facial skin! Less sun exposure ultimately equals less wrinkles! I’m in love with my Lo & Behold Naturals peppermint lip balm and would probably opt for swiping some sunscreen on my lips before applying it (as it doesn’t have SPF). But the tin is not very beach (or sand!) friendly so I may try this COOLA one on a trip with lots of sun exposure.

OUTFITS & ACCESSORIES

I’m definitely the type of beach-goer that would be all set for the week with a few bikinis, some sunscreen, and a pair of sunnies because all I care about is laying in the sand all day, every day! Apart from these essentials, I will usually pack some denim shorts, casual graphic tees & tanks (this is another swimsuit cover-up option in a pinch, but I’m not crazy about the combo of sunscreen skin and tight clothing), summery sandals (at least one nice pair of flats and one pair of heels/wedges), and some breezy dresses. I typically don’t even bring jewelry, but I was too excited about the Sugarfix by Baublebar for Target collection not to share these fun and affordable options and I think you could really mix and match them with any and all of the dresses I’ve linked. P.S. I’m calling it now- I think these Steve Madden Jaylen wedges will sell like hot cakes so if you like them, buy them NOW! Chloé originally released this style, then Mark Fisher came out with a dupe last summer that was perpetually sold out (and it looks like the same is already happening again this year). These wedges are practically identical to both high-end pairs for less than half the price of the designer dupes! Yet another reason to love Steve Madden!
